JUUSO
LAIVISTO GRABS FIRST PLACE AT CHINA¡¯S 8TH RED BULL
NANSHAN OPEN |
¡¡ |
¡¡ |
¡¡ |
| ¡¡ |

¡¡ Beijing,
CHINA ¨C January 10th, 2010
¨C Cloudy yet wind-free conditions in the Quiksilver
Nanshan Mellow Park created a moody backdrop as
yesterday¡¯s 12 qualified riders stepped up to do battle
at day two of the 8th Red Bull Nanshan Open,
Asia¡¯s largest stop on the Swatch TTR World Snowboard
Tour.
As the morning¡¯s
final session of this 4Star TTR event got underway, the
judges would be forced to slice the field of 12 down to
just four ¨C a task easier said than done! By the time
lunchtime rolled through, Juuso Laivisto (FIN),
David Bertschinger Karg (SUI), Sergey
Lapushkin (RUS), and Nick Hyne (NZ) had
impressed when it counted and secured their place in the
afternoon¡¯s Super Finals!
Showing some of
the best flow throughout the weekend, Sergey
Lapushkin was obviously proud to improve on his 10th
place at last year¡¯s event. ¡°I was happy to stomp my
first two runs, so decided to go for a ten (1080) on the
third ¨C not quite, but am so stoked on everything!¡±
Sergey¡¯s highest scoring run consisted of a perfect
BS900 mute, switch BS540 stalefish, backflip nose-grab
off the up-cannon and was good enough for second
place. Third place would go to David Bertschinger
Karg, unfortunately not able to stomp the clean runs
that had him placed first going into the finals. A
ridiculously huge FS1080 stomped halfway down the
landing left him struggling for speed on the second
kicker, yet he managed to finish off his run in style
with a smooth boardslide to 270-off the up-cannon and a
50-50 to back 180 off of the wallride.
None of these,
however, could stop a certain dedicated Finn! Wowing
both judges and crowd with a clean and technical run,
Juuso Laivisto rose victorious with a switch BS900
mute followed by a FS720 melon, finished off with a BS
to FS boardslide on the up-down, and a 50-50 to FS180
out of the downpipe. ¡°I¡¯m really happy! It¡¯s my first
time in China and the resort reminds me of my home
mountain, so it was kinda special to win here! This trip
is so well organized and we¡¯re all having so much fun¡
now where¡¯s the beer!?¡±
Taking fourth
place, Nick Hyne (NZ) was pleasantly surprised on
his result considering his luck leading up to the
competition ¨C ¡°I¡¯m stoked, my boardbag only just arrived
yesterday morning and I had to do the practice day on a
borrowed board. The park here is great with some good
variety, and the whole trip has just been super fun!¡±
Honorable mention goes to Chinese rider Wang Lei. The
highest placed local rider, Wang Lei represented
strongly on his home turf, securing a solid 9th
place. ¡°Everyone threw down some of their best tricks
and it was a really sick contest. I hope the riders
enjoy the rest of their time in China!¡±
And with the
competition side of the trip over, we¡¯re sure they will!
The riders now get to enjoy a trek at the Great Wall,
icebiking on Houhai lake, fake handbag shopping for
their girlfriends and perhaps, just maybe, one or two
after parties. Zaijian!

8th
Red Bull Nanshan Open ¨C Day 1 Comes to a Close as 12+1
Finalists Announced

¡¡ Beijing, CHINA
¨C January 9th, 2010 ¨C With the surrounding hills dusted
in snow, the stage was beautifully set as the first day
of the 8th Red Bull Nanshan Open came to a close with an
incredible day¡¯s worth of riding!
Despite wind
conditions forcing the morning runs to be delayed until
the afternoon, when they eventually died the riders
threw down like there was no tomorrow in the perfectly
shaped Quiksilver Nanshan Mellow Park. A big slam on
Tobias Karlsson¡¯s (SWE) third run, however, would cause
some serious judge deliberations! Due to uncertainties
regarding the severity of the 8th placed rider¡¯s
injuries and whether he could compete the following day,
the decision was made to allow the 13th placed rider
through on a wildcard. Much to the excitement of the
local crowd this would be Chinese rider Wang Lei, who
was obviously stoked on this surprise result!
David
Bertschinger Karg would deservedly qualify first, with
an impressive line that left both the judges and crowd
cheering for more! The Swiss rider¡¯s winning run
consisted of a huge FS900 tailgrab followed by a switch
BS540 melon, a steezy boardslide to FS270 out on the
up-cannon finished off with a boardslide to fakie over
the top of the wallride. Finnish rider Juuso Laivisto
would qualify second, stomping some super smooth
back-to-back 720s (BS and FS) and getting technical on
the rails with a 360 off the up-cannon. Nick Brown (NZ)
secured third with a crowd-pleasing Cab900 nose to FS540
melon, finishing off with a switch BS180 off the
up-cannon and FS boardslide on the wallride.
Riders to watch
tomorrow include Nick Hyne (NZ), stomping an impressive
run that included a switch 50-50 to switch BS360 off the
up-cannon, Erik Botner (NOR) who was throwing down hard
off both the larger kickers and rails and of course last
year¡¯s second place taker Atushi Ishikawa (JAP). We¡¯re
praying that the wind demons take the day off tomorrow
and we can¡¯t wait to see what¡¯s in store for us in the
finals!

8th Red Bull Nanshan Open Qualifier Results

Beijing, CHINA (December 26, 2009) ¨C It was smiles all
around for Andrew Wilde, He Wei, Li Jie, Ming Ming, Li
Penghuan and Jokey Tong as it was announced they had
qualified for the 8th Red Bull Nanshan Open today! Over
50 riders took to the Quiksilver Nanshan Mellow Park on
an unseasonably cold Saturday to battle it out for the
six remaining six spots in the 8th Red Bull Nanshan
Open, a 4Star Swatch Ticket To Ride World Snowboard Tour
competition.
While a freak Thursday night sandstorm left the snow
park covered in a 1cm layer of dirt on Friday, the park
crew worked furiously to clear the mess, and with a
fresh coat of nice, white man-made snow the park was
once again shreddable come Saturday.
After a quick morning warm-up session, the pressure was
on as riders took to the park for two runs, with only
their highest scoring run counted. The tension was
definitely visible as riders put their all into stomping
their runs when it mattered the most!
Surprisingly some of the competition favourites would
miss the cut this year, including last year¡¯s winners
Zhang Wei and Xfox. However those that made it through
did so deservedly. ¡°While it was a pity that some of the
bigger names didn¡¯t qualify, it¡¯s definitely cool to see
some of the up-and-comers pushing themselves and
surprising us! We¡¯re stoked on the lineup and happy to
see some fresh faces out there,¡± said Head Parkshaper
and Judge Marco Huang.
Absent from last year¡¯s event, comeback kid Andrew Wilde
would take home top honors this year, stomping his
stylish winning run on his first attempt. Starting it
off on the big kicker with a huge floating backside 180
followed by a steezed-out Cab 360, he then hit the boxes
with a switch combo on the up-down and a back 180 on,
Cab 360 off on the butter box. Second place went to
young-gun He Wei, stomping a FS540 and Cab 360 on the
kicker line finished off with a solid jib-run. After
finishing both runs he then wowed the crowd with a huge
FS900 guaranteeing he will be one to watch come January!
Li Jie snatched 3rd place with an effortless BS360 on
the big kicker, and while just scrubbing his FS540 on
the second he made up for it with a super steezy jib
run. Ming Ming, Li Penghuan, and Jokey would grab the
last three remaining spots with some solid runs through
the park.
With the full 8th Red Bull Nanshan Open riders list now
complete, the locally qualified riders are sure to be in
the park practicing non-stop over the next two weeks,
ensuring they have their tricks perfected and hopefully
dialling in some new ones! We can¡¯t wait to see what¡¯s
in store for Chinese snowboarding coming January.
